March-April Watercolor/Colored Pencil Lesson for “Hummingbird Vignette” Steps 1-16

On an 11″X14″ piece of illustration board, locate the center by drawing 2 lines from corner to corner.Draw the subject on tracing paper using a #2 or #3 pencil.Turn tracing paper over. Tape the tracing paper to cent of the illustration board and trace over the lines. Apply the masking fluid to the bird and flowers.Choose a design, place on areas outside the circle with tracing paper. Place painter’s tape to mask off edges of the board.Wet entire board with water. Use wet-on-wet technique, apply Cerulean Blue inside circle. Next, blend Peacock Blue outside circle. Then, apply Quinacridone Gold to the sides.Making sure board is dry, apply making fluid to you pattern outside circle.Wet board outside circle. Work from outside in using wet-on-wet technique. Apply Quin Gold,Tuscan Red, Peacock Blue. Use Vandyke Brown on the corners. Let colors blend.On dry board, glaze the outside of the board again. Use same colors. When sheen is off, spritz board with water or salt for texture. Dry the board.Wet a sponge thoroughly. Wring out excess water. Mix Sepia,Indig, Alizarine Crimson, gently dip sponge into mixture. Dab on board for texture.Make sure board is dry, remove the masking fluid from all areas.Wet flowers /leaves. Apply yellow and Opera on flowers and let colors blend. Paint the leaves and stems with green.Paint the bird’s wings with Tuscan Red, Yellow Ochre, Vandyke Brown.Paint throat Alizarine Crimson,Tuscan Red. The head a mix of Prussian Blue and Yellow Ochre. Tail and feet sepia. Feathers on body Payne’s Grey.Begin shading the bird,flowers, leaves, circle etc. using sharp colored pencils.Final completed “Hummingbird Vignette”.

Transfer drawing to watercolor paper.Apply Quinacridone Gold to the sky using the wet-on-wet technique.Brush in some clouds with Payne’s Grey. Dry the sky before next step.Apply Payne’s Grey to mountain. Light on left side, dark on right.Apply Quinacridone Gold to foreground using wet on dry technique.Apply Cerulean and Prussian Blue to the lake.Light on bottom, dark on top.Apply masking fluid on the ground area. Be sure it’s dry before application.Paint trees with Quinacridone Gold and Sepia.Glaze Quinacridon Gold over ground area.Be sure the masking fluid is dry first.Paint leaves and shadows using Quinacridone Gold and Sepia.Paint more leaves and bushes with Gold and Vandyke Brown.Glaze leaves and ground with Gold, Sepia and Brown. Paint pine branches with dark Green – mix Payne’s Grey and Yellow Ochre.Add more pine boughs and continue to glaze leaves.Use gouache to paint Orangefoliage behind pine tree. Stipple bushes with gouache. Darken mountain with Payne’s Grey.Continue glazing .Finish glazing to deepen tones and create textures and contrast.
